Key features

  • Codex for characters, places and lore
  • Outline and manuscript editor in one workspace
  • AI chat that can use your story notes
  • Choose any major AI model and edit the prompts
  • AI tools from the Hobbyist plan up

Pricing

  • Scribe: $4/month, without AI tools
  • Hobbyist: $8/month, with AI
  • Artisan: $14/month; Specialist: $20/month
  • Model usage is billed separately by your AI provider
Good fit for

Series and worldbuilding-heavy novelists who want control over which AI model writes with them.

Look elsewhere if

Beginners who want a simple app that works without connecting an AI account.

How it scored

  • Fiction & story writing: 90/100. A Codex, outline, manuscript editor and story-aware AI chat make a full planning and drafting workspace, though the AI needs setup.
  • Prose quality & control: 100/100. The most control here: pick any major model and edit the prompts it uses.
  • Value: 80/100. AI plans run from $8 to $20 a month, plus your own AI provider's usage fees.
  • Privacy & reliability: 70/100. Offers the standard data controls for this type of tool.
  • Expert & User Ratings: 90/100. Recommended by several reviewers of fiction-writing software.

Our verdict

Novelcrafter tops this list for the control it gives over prose and its suitability for long projects and series. The AI needs setup and costs extra on top of the subscription.

Pros
  • Codex tracks a whole series
  • Choose the model and edit prompts
  • Low subscription prices
Cons
  • You pay your own AI provider
  • No AI on the cheapest plan
  • Steeper learning curve
Things to know before you buy:
  • The $4 a month Scribe plan has no AI tools; AI starts at Hobbyist for $8 a month.
  • Model usage is billed separately by your own AI provider, on top of the subscription.
  • You choose the model and can edit the prompts, so you need to set up a provider account first.

  • Prose quality & control: 80/100. Drafts in your chosen style using Story Bible context, but prose often needs heavy editing.

  • Privacy & reliability: 70/100. Offers the standard data controls for this type of tool.
  • Expert & User Ratings: 90/100. Among the most widely recommended tools here.

Our verdict

Sudowrite is the easiest way in here, covering planning, drafting and feedback with no AI account to set up. It places just behind Novelcrafter because prose often needs heavy editing and credits drain quickly.

Pros
  • Built entirely for fiction
  • Story Bible keeps plot in view
  • Works with no AI account to set up
Cons
  • Credits can run out on long drafts
  • Prose often needs heavy editing

How to Choose

Decide whether you need to plan, draft or revise

Tools split into three camps. Story-planning apps such as Sudowrite and Novelcrafter track characters and plot while you draft, editing assistants such as ProWritingAid improve a finished draft, and general writers such as Rytr and Jasper produce short pieces. Pick the camp that matches where you get stuck.

Check how the AI is paid for

Some tools bundle AI credits into the subscription, while others ask you to connect your own provider and pay for the model separately. Novelcrafter and Raptor Write work the second way, which can be cheaper for heavy use but is harder to budget. Read what a monthly credit allowance covers before you start a long draft.

Look for story memory

Fiction needs the AI to remember names, places and plot threads. A Story Bible, Codex or Lorebook feeds that information back into each generation so a character does not change eye colour in chapter twelve. Tools without it, such as general writing assistants, need you to paste context in by hand.

Test the prose with your own scene

Reviewers note that AI fiction can read as generic or over-written and usually needs editing. Use a free plan or trial to run the same scene through two or three tools and compare style, control and how much you would have to rewrite.

Consider content rules and control

General tools may refuse darker or mature themes, while some fiction-focused tools are more permissive. Also check how much control you have over the model, the prompt and the context sent to the AI, since that shapes how closely output matches your voice.

Match the export and publishing needs

If you plan to self-publish, tools with title, book-description and interior-design features, such as Dibbly Create, can save time. If you only want a drafting space, you can write in one tool and format in another, so check what you can export before committing to a long project.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best AI tool for writing a novel?

Sudowrite is the top pick here because it covers the whole fiction workflow, from a Story Bible and outline to scene drafting and rewriting. Novelcrafter is a close second for series and worldbuilding-heavy projects, and it lets you choose the AI model.

Is there a free AI writing tool for fiction?

Yes. Raptor Write is free, though you pay your chosen model's rates through your own OpenRouter account. Squibler has a free plan with 1,000 AI credits a month, Dibbly Create includes 20,000 tokens a month, and Grammarly and ProWritingAid have limited free plans.

Can AI write a whole book for me?

Squibler can generate a structured book or screenplay draft from an idea, and other tools draft scene by scene. Reviewers say the output is usually generic and needs heavy editing, so most authors use AI to plan, brainstorm and get past blocks rather than to replace their own writing.

What is the difference between Sudowrite and NovelAI?

Sudowrite is a full fiction app with a Story Bible, outlining, drafting and feedback tools that works out of the box. NovelAI is a co-writing editor running its own story models, with a Lorebook and memory, and it has fewer content restrictions for genre fiction.

Do I need Grammarly or ProWritingAid as well as a fiction tool?

They do a different job. Fiction tools help you plan and draft, while ProWritingAid and Grammarly check style, grammar and clarity once you have text. ProWritingAid goes deeper for fiction with pacing and repetition reports and chapter critiques.

How We Evaluated

Every Flickthru ranking follows the same five-step process, applied the same way to every product on the page.

  1. Market scan: We gathered the 32 platforms recommended across current expert reviews, buyer guides and verified-user ratings, then shortlisted the 10 that best fit this category and offer their own built-in AI.
  2. Evidence gathering: For each shortlisted product we collected features, plans and current pricing from the vendor, alongside the strengths and weaknesses reported in recent expert reviews.
  3. Risk checks: We checked every product for recent price changes and service reliability. Anything relevant is summarised in the product’s Detailed Analysis and reflected in its score.
  4. Scoring: Each product is scored against the five criteria in our Evaluation Methodology using the same rules for every product, and the Flickthru Score out of 100 combines them. Fiction & story writing, the main job these tools do, counts most. Value is judged on what the paid plans deliver for their price. Each product’s Detailed Analysis explains how it scored on every criterion.
  5. Editorial independence: Rankings are decided by Flickthru’s editorial process alone. Placement cannot be bought.
