Marketing teams that care most about on-brand drafts across many formats.
Teams that want built-in content scoring and brief-building for search.
How it scored
- SEO optimisation: 40/100. SEO guidance is light; most teams pair it with a separate optimiser.
- Content drafting: 100/100. Some of the most polished on-brand long-form drafts here, with Canvas, agents and brand voices.
- Value: 50/100. $69 per seat a month ($59 billed yearly), and you still need a separate SEO tool for this job.
- Privacy & reliability: 70/100. Offers the standard data controls for this type of tool.
- Expert & User Ratings: 80/100. Widely recommended as a writer, less so for SEO.

Comparison Table
Select products using the Add To Compare buttons above.
How to Choose
Decide whether you need an optimiser or a writer
Optimisers such as Surfer, Clearscope and NeuronWriter score a draft against the pages already ranking and tell you what to add. Writers such as Koala and Jasper produce the first draft faster but give little ranking guidance. Many teams pair one of each, so decide which job is your bottleneck.
Test with a keyword you actually care about
Run the same target keyword through two or three tools and compare the briefs and drafts side by side. Look at whether the suggested headings match what you would write and how much editing the draft needs before you would publish it.
Understand the limits behind the price
Plans are capped by articles, documents, content analyses or AI credits a month, and the cap matters more than the headline price. Work out how many pieces you publish or refresh monthly, then check the plan that covers that number.
Check seats and the jump between tiers
Entry plans often include one seat, and extra users or higher article limits can push you into a plan several times the price. If a team will share the tool, compare the per-seat cost and what the next tier adds before you commit.
Look at AI search features if they matter to you
Several tools now track how a brand appears in answers from ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews, sometimes as the main product and sometimes as an add-on. If that is not a priority, avoid paying for it in a plan built around it.
Plan for editing and fact-checking
AI drafts can read generically and may contain errors, whichever tool you use. Budget time for a human edit, and check publishing integrations such as WordPress or Google Docs so finished articles move out of the tool easily.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an AI SEO writing tool?
It is software that researches what already ranks for a keyword, then helps you plan, draft and optimise an article to compete. Most combine a content score or brief with an AI writer, and some also track how a brand appears in AI search answers.
Which tool is best if I want to optimise articles I already write?
Surfer and Clearscope are built around grading a draft against top results, while NeuronWriter offers similar term-based guidance at a lower price. Surfer includes a live content score in its editor, and Clearscope adds monitoring of published pages.
Which tool is cheapest for getting started?
NeuronWriter starts at $23 a month, and Koala AI has a free trial of 5,000 words before its paid plans from $25 a month. Frase starts at $49 a month, and Semrush Content Toolkit is $60 a month with a 7-day trial.
Do I still need a separate SEO tool if I use Jasper?
Usually, yes. Jasper focuses on on-brand drafts across many marketing formats, and its SEO guidance is lighter than a dedicated optimiser's. Teams often draft in Jasper and optimise in a tool such as Surfer or Clearscope.
Can these tools publish directly to my site?
Some can. Semrush Content Toolkit publishes to WordPress and links to Google Docs, and Surfer's Standard plan lists WordPress and Google Docs integrations. Koala AI also lists WordPress publishing, so check the integration on the exact plan you plan to buy.
How We Evaluated
Every Flickthru ranking follows the same five-step process, applied the same way to every product on the page.
- Market scan: We gathered the 44 platforms recommended across current expert reviews, buyer guides and verified-user ratings, then shortlisted the 10 that best fit this category and offer their own built-in AI.
- Evidence gathering: For each shortlisted product we collected features, plans and current pricing from the vendor, alongside the strengths and weaknesses reported in recent expert reviews.
- Risk checks: We checked every product for recent price changes and service reliability. Anything relevant is summarised in the product’s Detailed Analysis and reflected in its score.
- Scoring: Each product is scored against the five criteria in our Evaluation Methodology using the same rules for every product, and the Flickthru Score out of 100 combines them. SEO optimisation, the main job these tools do, counts most. Value is judged on what the paid plans deliver for their price. Each product’s Detailed Analysis explains how it scored on every criterion.
- Editorial independence: Rankings are decided by Flickthru’s editorial process alone. Placement cannot be bought.
